So, without further ado, let's dive right in!
Meaning of Janda Kembang In the Indonesian Language
[Janda kembang] is a term used for a divorced woman who is still young and doesn't have a kid. This definition is taken from Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (The Great Dictionary of The Indonesian Language). Still, in real-life conversation, usually, people call a divorced woman who is pretty and young enough a [janda kembang] whether she already has a kid or not.
[Kembang] means flower. If you translate this phrase into English literally, the translation would be 'flower widow.'
How to Pronounce Janda Kembang
Let's hear how to pronounce [janda kembang] below.
Next, let's watch clips from movies or youtube where this phrase [janda kembang] is spoken.
Janda Kembang In Movie Clips
The first clip that we are about to watch is from Nikita Mirzani's youtube channel. Nikita Mirzani is a famous Indonesian celebrity. Let's watch the clip down below.
What Nikita Mirzani said in the clip with English translations is as follows.
Nikita Mirzani: Oke, Crazy Nikmir Real. Kali ini aku mendatangkan kalian wanita cantik yang sebentar lagi katanya mau menjadi janda kembang. Kalau! Kalau! Kalau engga ya berarti ada suaminya lagi. (Okay, Crazy Nikmir Real people. This time, I brought you a beautiful woman who some people said is about to become a widow. If! If! If not, she will be with her husband then.)
In this clip, Nikita Mirzani interviewed Celine Evangelista, an Indonesian actress. She is married to Stefan, an Indonesian actor, and has 4 children from her marriage. At the time of the interview, she is having a problem with her marriage, and some say that she is about to divorce.
That's why Nikita Mirzani said this,
Katanya mau menjadi janda kembang. (Some say she is about to become a widow.)
Because Celine is still young and she is also pretty, Nikita Mirzani used the term [janda kembang] here.
Vocabulary From the Scene
[Kali ini] = This time. This phrase is usually used when someone wants to begin a show, usually used in Reality Shows on TV.
[Aku] is informal for [saya] = I.
[Mendatangkan] = to bring in. In this sentence, 'Kali ini aku mendatangkan kalian wanita cantik..," actually this sentence needs [ke] or [kepada]. She just dropped that word and usually things like this happens in conversational Indonesian. The proper sentence is, 'Kali ini aku mendatangkan kepada kalian wanita cantik yang sebentar lagi katanya mau menjadi janda kembang."
[Wanita cantik] = beautiful woman.
[Sebentar lagi] = very soon, about to.
[Engga] = [ngga] = [nggak] = [enggak] = [tidak] = [tak] = not.
